What is remedial massage?
Remedial massage is a structured assessment and treatment of the a patient’s muscles, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues in order to assist in their rehabilitation and injury management. This type of massage therapy is performed to promote positive conditions for the body to return to normal health after sustaining injury.

Health Science Subjects:
Pathology
• An understanding of common injuries, conditions and of the role of massage in support of the healing process including an awareness of contra-indications and cautions applicable to this therapy
Regional Anatomy
• Provides a more detailed knowledge of the body pertaining to movement and support
Biomechanics
• Gives students a more detailed understanding of the way in which body parts are designed for movement and the way movement is accomplished and controlled
• Postural analysis
Business Subjects:
Business Development
• Aims to give an overview of personal, industry and business aspects that need to be considered when entering the massage industry
Practical Components:
Lymphatic Drainage
• Provides students with specific techniques in a particular sequence aimed at moving lymphatic fl uid through the body
Musculoskeletal Assessment
• Develop in students the ability to perform a physical assessment appropriate for patients presenting for remedial massage. This subject looks at making a different diagnosis of soft tissue dysfunction
Remedial Sports Massage
• Apply basic and advanced taping techniques
• This subject develops the skills necessary to provide competent massage to facilitate sports performance, promote recovery and assist in the prevention and management of sports injuries
Remedial Clinical Practice:
• Develops a professional assessment and skill set to provide a comprehensive treatment protocol in clinical practice. Remedial techniques include:
Stretching
Introduces the student to the principles and techniques available for static and PNF stretching to better enhance massage treatments.
Trigger Point Therapy
Enables the student to understand and carry out an effective treatment for myofascial trigger point/referred pain.
Cupping
The use of vacuum cups to improve muscle integrity.
Myofascial Tension Technique
Covers the physiology of connective tissue fascia and teaches techniques to release tissue restrictions throughout the entire body.
Reflexology
Deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet which correspond to all the glands, organs and parts of the body, from a remedial perspective
Treatment Protocols
Provides the student with skills in regard to, clinical practice, professional ethics, referrals, record keeping and report writing

VET Student Loans is an Australian Government loan scheme. *Eligibility criteria apply Click here for further details
VET Student Loans is an Australian Government Loan scheme available to assist eligible students studying higher level vocational education and training (VET) qualifications to pay their tuition fees. Higher level VET qualifications are at the diploma level and VET Student loans is only available on the Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52021). VET Student Loans can be used to pay all or part of an eligible student’s tuition fees, but cannot be used for additional study costs such as accommodation or text books.
A VET student loan gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Am I eligible for VET Student Loans?
You are eligible for VET Student Loans if you:
are an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder (resident in Australia for the duration of the unit); AND
are a full fee-paying / fee for service student studying a diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate or graduate diploma level course at an approved VET Student Loans provider; OR
are a student subsidised by the Victorian, South Australian, Queensland or Western Australian State Government studying a diploma or advanced diploma course; AND
have not exceeded the Student Loans limit (see below); AND
meet the tax file number (TFN) requirements: OR
if you don’t have a TFN you can give your provider a Certificate of application for a TFN. This certificate is available from the Australian Taxation Office (opens in a new window) after you have applied for a TFN; AND
meet course requirements as follows:
– are a full fee-paying / fee for service student studying a diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate or graduate diploma level course at an approved VET Student Loans provider; OR
– are a student subsidised by a state or territory government (other than the Australian Capital Territory) studying a diploma or advanced diploma course; AND
– are enrolled with an approved provider in an eligible unit of study by the census date for that unit.
Please note a Vet Student Loan will not be approved for students who do not meet eligibility requirements.
How do I apply for VET Student Loans?
If you are eligible for VET Student Loans assistance and would like to apply for a loan, please contact the Melbourne Institute of Massage Therapy and Myotherapy and Myotherapy Course Advisor on 9455 1926 to make a time to discuss your enrolment under VET Student Loans further. Upon enrolling, you will be required to review the ‘VET Student Loans information booklet’ and complete the ‘Request for VET Student Loans Assistance Form’.

The entry requirements into the Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52021) Upgrade course is to have completed the Certificate IV in Massage (HLT42015) . If you’ve completed an earlier version of a Certificate IV, such as the HLT40312 or earlier, then please contact our Course Advisors to discuss your bridging options to allow entry to this course.
Our Health Science units are delivered online, therefore access to a laptop will be required. This will need to be brought to some on-campus classes.
Please speak to our Course Advisors if you do not have access and they can discuss your options.
