Sports Massage Upper Body

Students undertaking the Sports Massage course at the Melbourne Institute of Massage Therapy should expect to be able to tailor their treatment for the athlete to the role in which they are playing in the athlete’s conditioning.

Sports massage aims to introduce the student to more goal orientated massage where they will develop a sequence of techniques that target specific anatomical regions.

The aim of sports massage is to reduce unnecessary muscle tension, promote circulation, desensitize trigger points and symptomatic tissue.  As well the sports massage therapist will aim to reduce structural muscle thickening, adhesions and connective tissue.

The therapist should tailor their treatment according to the role in which they are playing in the athlete’s conditioning.

Therefore, a general sequence that is flexible and adaptable will be taught.

With experience, you will modify this sequence to suit your needs and the needs of the athlete

Sports Massage Upper Body will focus on the following areas:

  • Superficial Back
  • Gluteals
  • Deep Back
  • Posterior Shoulder Girdle
  • Anterior Shoulder Girdle
  • Neck

The prerequisite for this course is the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy
